Overview
What is MSME / Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is the Government of India's official online system launched in July 2020 by the Ministry of Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises. It replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar process and now serves as the sole method for MSME recognition in India.
The Udyam Registration certificate is an official government proof of your business's MSME status and is mandatory to avail of the various benefits and subsidies reserved exclusively for MSMEs by the Central and State governments.

FAQs
Frequently Asked Questions
Everything you need to know about MSME / Udyam Registration before applying.
Is MSME Registration mandatory in India?
MSME Registration is not legally mandatory, but it is highly recommended. Without it, you cannot avail of any government benefits, subsidies, priority lending, or procurement preferences reserved for MSMEs. It is a simple, free process with enormous upside.
How long does Udyam Registration take?
The Udyam Registration certificate is generated instantly on the government portal once all details are filled correctly. With Tax Gyani's expert assistance, your entire process including Aadhaar OTP, PAN validation, and certificate delivery is typically completed within 1–2 hours.
Can I update my MSME Registration after getting it?
Yes. You can update your Udyam Registration details including address, bank account, business activity, and financial figures at any time on the Udyam portal using your URN. Annual updates are mandatory for the registration to remain active and accurate.
Is Udyam Registration the same as Udyog Aadhaar?
No. Udyog Aadhaar was the old MSME registration system valid until June 30, 2020. From July 1, 2020, the Government of India replaced it with Udyam Registration, which is a more transparent, online, and Aadhaar + PAN based system. All existing Udyog Aadhaar registrations needed to be migrated to Udyam by March 2021.
Can a startup apply for MSME Registration?
Yes! Startups recognised by DPIIT under the Startup India scheme can also register as MSMEs if they meet the investment and turnover criteria. In fact, having both Startup India recognition and MSME Registration gives you access to maximum benefits from both schemes.
What happens if my turnover exceeds the MSME limit?
If your business grows beyond the Medium Enterprise limit (turnover > ₹250 Crore), you will no longer qualify as an MSME and your registration will become inactive. You will need to update your financial figures on the portal, after which the system will automatically reclassify or deregister you.
Does MSME Registration help in getting bank loans?
Absolutely. MSME Registration is one of the most important documents banks ask for when processing MSME loans. Under the CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for Micro and Small Enterprises) scheme, MSMEs can get collateral-free loans up to ₹2 crore. Banks are also mandated to lend to MSMEs at priority lending rates.
What is the validity of Udyam Registration?
Udyam Registration is valid for lifetime — there is no expiry or renewal requirement. However, you must update your annual turnover and investment figures on the portal every year after filing your Income Tax Return to keep the registration active and in the correct category.
